    Handmade Pocket Stove

Couple of years back I made a pocket stove.
Youtube led me through step by step and I love it. Really handy and a great bit of kit...

    Nice
Iv had a kelly kettle for years I love it but it's bulky so it's more my group camping mess kit more than a personal one. I hav just ordered my self a Swedish army trangia. wanted one since I was in the cadets when I saw one for the first time. But more on topic I made a fancy feast the uver day for the fun of it and to be honest I love it. Iv got a 9 cup coffee percolator and I keep running it on the fancy feast takes about 10min to brew up. I also hav a Altoids tin here laying around but I'm thinking of turning it in to a charcoal hand warmer. Il post some pics here when if I get round to making it.

I've got an mkettle which is the same idea as a kelly kettle but is great for 1 as it only holds about a pint

Very topical as I plan to build a version of the Fancee Feast stove myself this weekend.

It's a Gourmet cat food tin from tesco's. Maybe other retailers my sell fancee feast I don't know if it's just a American brand. So it's a Gourmet stove really. The center is a tomato paste tin and the fiberglass is on long term loan from work so I can't help you on that one unless you are willing to change courier.

How do you find the penny works in the cone?

Works fine, see the jetting pics below... once it has primed.
          BTW
If anyone wants the little penny stove, let me know, I'll post it on. It is feeling lonely, left on the shelf.

Jetting (next to the Usurper, the Speedster)

The speedster can be snuffed and unused fuel stored, the penny has to burn out (fuel measurement is important)

The penny stove is supposed to be pretty efficient, and it's quite a fast stove. But it is only efficient if you carefully measure the fuel.
Whereas the the Speedster is a slow burner and is very efficient too, but you don't waste fuel, snuff it and put on the lid. On a day trip, or a short overnighter you can just fill up and you'll get a couple of burns out of it. Bit like a Trangia, but way lighter.
I like the cat can stoves, with the built in stand, but I'm a clumsy klutz, always setting up on a crazy slope. it's safer and more stable with my Carlsberg caldera cone.

All done, only done a quick burn, seems to boil water very quickly and lasted ages on not much fuel. Really looking forward to doing some more testing when I have a bit of time

Well....from my research on YT these are great for boiling water but not much else so will be only used on my 'lightweight' trips for rehydrating packet meals etc. or on my stealth and 'meets' for boiling water for coffee in the morning for my 'breakfast from the hammock' as Shug puts it.

But it was a nice little project and kept me out of mischief for a while. I am, however, seriously impressed with the fuel efficiency and low weight that this stove exhibits. Once I manufacture the simmer ring for it it will be even better.

Lots of 'anorak' testing to be done now to find out how much fuel cooks what and how long the burn times are for a specific fuel load etc. etc.

              Cheers

              Steve

                    Geek/ Nerd time strikes!!!!
.......A quick test of my home made Fancee Feast/ Gourmet alcohol stove against the mini-Trangia. Set both up with just 30ml of meths and put a pot of 500ml of cold tap water in the pot.
                    Here are the results......

Gourmet Stove: Weights in at 24g brought the water to a 'full-on' boil after 8m40s and went out after using the 30ml of meths after 10m26s.
Mini Trangia: Weighs in at 89g (plus trivet of 18g) = 107g took 1m25s to bloom, brought the water to a 'full-on' boil after 12m50s and went out after using the 30ml of meths after 17m07s.
......I shall take my anorak off now.......

                      Good work there Bowlin.

It's very addictive is stove building.☺

Did those results come from indoor tests? I've been eyeing up the FF stove for a while, it's one I've not tried building yet.

I used to use the trangia burner and a DIY trivet with the small trangia kettle and an aluminium foil windscreen as my first lightweight brew kit. The trivet really helps with fuel economy compared to the standard setup
