    All round knife

    Hi guys,
I'm new to outdoor living and I'm in a quandary whether to buy a hatchet or save up for a knife that can be used for everything, batoning to carving, like an Esee6 for ex. Unfortunately my budget doesn't stretch to these big knives.
If anyone has a good knife for sale that would be much appreciated. I am a beginner so doesn't need to be a lovely handcrafted job.

    Many thanks in advance.
    Kris.

    Hi Kris D
A morakniv wood be a good start. Thay are cheep pritty dam indestructible sharp out the box and with a little stroping good anuf to shave with. And after you have increased your skills it can be used as a backup knife. Well worth a look

      Hi there,
Thanks for the advice mate greatly appreciated. I was about to order the 850 heavy duty companion. I presume the higher the number the better ? As in 860 better than 850 ?

I was also looking for a large knife to use instead of a hatchet for batoning but you think this 860 would suffice and better than heavy duty 850 ?

      Thanks mate

        Hi Kris
+1 on a Mora for a first knife as it can be used for a multitude of outdoor tasks but not really heavy work like an axe. A retractable or folding pruning saw is good for cutting bigger logs that are to big for the knife to handle.
Use a saw to cut your logs then the Mora to split, carve, whittle etc.
There are lots of good quality knives about that are cheaper than the Esee ones - what's your budget?
        Neil

Hi Kris. I believe there is a Gerber Bear Grylls knife that should accommodate your needs. I think it's the survival knife... http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/Gerber_Be...FScFwwod-00HIg

The behco Lapplander saw and knife kits worth a look as well. the knife is a mora rebranded I think. Iv batoning with my mora in the past dry and green wood. I wouldn't go much bigger them 2" with it. But to be honest Iv only needed to batoning once when I was on a kamp site with dry wood for my kelly kettle.and that was only because I didn't want to go scratching around the site for small sticks.and if I was out in the wild I'd be useing my husqvarna woodsman axe and my buck saw.

Hi guys thanks for the great feedback again.
I am planning to get a mora, just not sure which as they seem great bushcraft knives. It was more for heavy duty use I wanted a back up. I have the Bahco folding saw which is great. My budget would be around £50, hence looking for second hand for a larger knife.
That Bear Grylls one suggested looks very good. I have a sceptical opinion on famous names branding products in case the price is higher because their name is on it rather than a reflection of quality. I'm in a quandary in this case as reviews look good on YouTube.
I will give this some thought and if anyone has more thoughts on this knife and or alternatives in same £55 price bracket that would be great.
              Thanks again

Just to add, how frustrating is it seeing knives for sale in the states for less than half the price we pay here. The mentioned bear grylls knife is $30 on Amazon in the states but cheapest price in uk is £55.

                  Kris,

Buy a Mora, an excellent all round knife for not much money. I would also recommend an Opinel (no. 8 or 7) for stuff like food prep etc.

Neither are much money but both will serve you well.

                  Cheers
                  Steve

With a Mora (or similar European brand) and the saw you're sorted. An axe is great but not as versatile .

Yeah I see your point mate. The axe was just a thought for batoning but I think a good knife will suffice

The heavy duty Mora Comp MG or the Bushcraft are both excellent knives for the money and are the best in the range if you for see batoning.

Although, if your budget is £50....😈

Yeah the heavy duty does seem to be rated highly.

My Opinel 8 & a sharpening stone take care of most things for me.

Iv always got a Opinel no 8 carbon steel in my pocket at work and out in the wild I'm trialing the idea of a opinel No12 with the opinel No12 saw to see if thay work as a lite duty bush combo I'm working on how to make a sheath to hold them both together.

                      Kris,

I have an old mora (used but not abused) which you could have for the cost of postage (having said that I know nothing of the legalities of posting knives in the UK, so if anyone has knowledge please share) to get you/ your son going if you like.

                      Cheers

I'm not sure on postage laws. Long as safe it should be fine I would think mate.
Thanks again. Will i pm you my address or here ?

That's very generous of you Steve. RE postage, as long as you declare when questioned that it's a knife, you ensure it's properly packed and that the sharp is covered with card, sheath or similar to stop injury to anyone before it is opened then all is well.
