Hang last night - snapped UQ Shock cord

Got out last night with a couple mates who had never hung before so all me gear was set up last night to accommodate. Hence its now all hanging in hard as it bleedin rained all night haha

Saw an idea somewhere so copied it and made a little spice/herb kit:

Anyway, I was fiddling with UQ and pulled the channel elastic too tight and snapped it :-( anyone point me to some suitable (strong) replacement shock cord please? Need it pretty quick.. And any tips for doing it or is it just a simple retread through channel with a knitter needle or something?

Bouncingrabbit.co.uk have a veriety. Very good quality as well.

Just rethread it, I haven't even needed a knitting needle for any of my own quilts when playing with the suspension. Which underquilt is it you have? Even cheap, rubbish shock cord I've bought before has been pretty strong. I'm surprised it snapped.

Looks like a cracking setup, you've got some lucky mates

Cheers man, I'll take a look there. What's the going diameter for this purpose?

I was really trying to get the UQ to pull tight and lift the hammock a bit, never quite seemed close enough. It's a uk hammocks one, 4 season down, overstuffed - might it be too heavy to get it pulled up tight and snug like I'm expecting it?

3mm should be plenty strong, I've got 1/8th" (a hair over 3mm) on my 0° ugq zeppelin and haven't had any issues.

It shouldn't have snapped unless the uq was insanely tight. I can't snap any the shock cord I have with my hands... even 1mm, cuts my skin.

A good deal of the problem with the ukh quilts are that they aren't shaped properly so you'll never get them working as well as one that is with the same baffle height and volume of down. Another is that they have no way to stop the quilt sliding back and forth and bunching towards the middle, creating gaps a.k.a secondary suspension.

How are you with a sewing machine? A grosgrain tab with lineloc on each corner will hold the quilt in place, allow you to adjust each corner independently as well as helping snug it to your back better.

Terrible I'd imagine. Wouldn't know where to begin.

I use a single wire from a length of 1.5mm twin and earth I got lying about. Twisted a loop in one end to make a long needle. Pass the needle thru the channel, thread the cord in the eye and pull it down the channel.

Yep, that's the easiest way to do it gadget. I'm too lazy to make something to do something easier though lol.

Nerocircus, there might be another way, could you take a photo of a corner of the quilt? Maybe we can work out a different way to add secondary suspension.

I'v used the end cinch cords on my UKH quilt as secondery suspension. Just put a few wraps of the extra cord around the primery and tied off so it works like a prussik (i never remember the names for knots) i'll see if i can get a pic later, it works well

Have a look at Shug in his Greylock 4 at about 2:45,

Here's some pics of the end. Sorry if it's not clear - all black doesn't help! I had put the chord locks on to try and hold it tight rather than tying knots for now

Looking at your photos, and this video,

it looks like the UKH UQ only has a primary suspension (running though the channel). Those black cordlocks are for cinching the end baffle, yes?

It might be that without a secondary suspension line, your UQ is doing the accordion thing (bunching up), so not snugging up right, therefore you tighten the primary even more?
My HG UQ comes with primary and secondary suspension shockcord, likee dis,

worth watching the whole thing, but detail is at 3:30

I couldn't resist fiddling, and rejigged my UQ suspension (I know... who'da thunk of me?).
I feel I will have to get out a do a video to show it off (who said, "attention whore"?... that's just rude).

Yep, the black cord locks are for cinching up. No matter how tight I pulled it, it still never really sat as tight as I think it should - certainly struggled to get it to 'lift' the hammock like folk suggest. So what's my best bet? Something like sunndog suggests? I'm crap at these things but I'm keen to get it sorted asap as have a couple trips coming up v soon.

Think I need me some of that secondary suspension! Beats me why they don't all come with it...
Given that I'm not going to try and play with any sewing related paraphernalia, what's my best bet here with reference to the hg type of suspension? None of you lovely lot live close enough for me to pop round to be my knight in shining armour, I don't think!

Some of these sewn in with some 3m bungee would be best bet if I get someone to do it? Sure me Mam used to use a sewing machine!
