    DIY 11.5ft Hammock - 1.0 Robic XL

    Good evening everyone!
Just finished my second DIY project. Who could have known that making your own gear could be so much fun!
It's a 11.5ft Robic XL hammock with dual knotty mod in burnt orange. It's super comfortable, although I think I might have slightly messed up my dimensions with the footbox. I think I should have moved it about a foot closer to the center.
My scale is broken so unfortunately I don't know exactly what it weighs. It's super light compared to my Hammeck 1.6 Netty though.
Can't wait to take it out to the woods for a proper test! - Tobias

Wow she looks a real peach, loving the burnt orange. What width did you go for? How does the Robic feel?

That looks great and very comfortable.
I think I'm going to have a go at making a long hammock 11ft +. I'm 6'6" tall so want plenty of length (no puns please). What length and width would you suggest?

Nice one, looks good! Love the colour.
Meadows, I reckon an 11ft in an XL fabric would be fine. I'm 6'3" and I haven't been comfier in a bigger hammock than 10.5' by by 65" finished. I think width and getting the rl length correct is more important than length once you go above 10ft. For me anyway.

Thanks for input. There's lots to learn about the design side that I guess will be harder than the actual construction.
What does the XL in Robic XL mean?

Loving the anti-stealth orange, loud and proud!
          So what's the story here?

Is that just a matching Bishop bag or something more exotic?

DD underblanket? How's that working out for you?
(just ordered one on the BCUK group buy)

Awww now you are making me envious Tobias! That looks excellent, very well done Sir!

An interesting config for the DD UQ as well, although when I experimented with attaching the 'side/ middle' lines over the central ridgeline (as in your pic) I found that I felt that the UQ was 'constricting' me. Have you spent a night in the hammock using this UQ config yet? I would be interested to hear how it worked out for you.

            Cheers
            Steve

Yep, it's just a simple double ended stuff sack I made from some spare fabric. This thing compresses down to absolutely nothing .

I actually just got it the other week. Haven't had time to play around with it properly yet, but so far my impressions of it are very good. It's super comfortable and very warm. Sure as heck beats the el-cheapo blue foam pad I used before :-).

Not yet, I was just messing around a bit with the suspension. I think you may be right, the lines got a bit in the way, especially at the head end, and the quilt performed just fined without them.

I find that in calm (i.e. non-windy) conditions that I don't need to attach/ use the side/middle lines at all. In colder windier times I clip them to the 'D' ring at the end of my tarp which seems to work well (for me anyway).

                    Cheers

I take it the DD underblanket doesn't have a primary suspension line (shockcord) running thru' a channel down each side like a normal underquilt.
I suppose, because it is oval instead of square, that might not work so well.
I may have to experiment when I get mine. Is there a channel (on the sides) I might be able to work a length of 2 or 3mm shockcord down?
If not, I guess I could make a channel with wide grossgrain.

Yes it does (sort of) but the shockcords which run down each side is not connected to the shockcord at the end as it is on many others (i.e. It is not a continuous loop/ ring)...Hope that makes sense?

From the RipStopByTheRoll website, "Like the other fabrics in our XL line, we've custom woven 1.0 oz ROBIC® XL to be WIDER than standard fabrics at 68" versus the more common 60" width"

I guess you can only order it from them.
What were your material/delivery costs Tobias?

I ordered some other bits and bobs as well ( A bunch of amsteel for splicing whoopie slings, tonnes of fun! )
