    Prices of underquilts

Hi all, I'm looking ( again ) at underquilts, on my journey I noticed a price hike of some £30 odd pounds on the uk hammoks one, it was £145 ish the other day I'm sure it was, anyone confirm that ? now at £173. That's a lot by any standard, I'm in a dilemma over UQ now ??????

The US stuff works out about the same, and a lot more choice.
I am putting myself thru a quandry ATM too. Whether to slum it in a DD underblanket, or pay 4 times as much for a down UQ that weighs half.
I am trying to get a bit lighter pack weight, my last time out my rig was nearly 18kg! Shed a lot going for a lighter frameless sack (650g!), but my load limit is going to be 10kg now, hence the desire for down. Dumped the the 5 season synth sleeping bag that weighed in at over 2kg for a down bag of 800g, so I am getting there, bit by bit.

There's the problem, weight over price, I did my own mod to a bag to turn it into a cocoon but it hasn't got cold enough to test it, if it works then great, that together with a lightweight bag should see me right through British winter, but although it's down, it's fairly bulky, hopefully it will turn cold soon, got a meet in January in the North East ( home ground ) so can test it, BUT, UQ...... kit / need / want lol

      But not at any price.

Spend your money on the big three. Pack, sleep system, and shelter. Get those three down in weight and the rest is easy
Down is half the weight but also packs an awful lot smaller....i do one or two nighters with a 35ltr bag. a 5kg base weight is fairly easy too

I think its a good investment, i asked about the jacks R better seirra sniveller on the u.s forum and one bloke said his are still going strong after ten years. I'v got a down jacket that cost me a lot of money at the time. but that was the best part of 20 years ago......its the kinda kit that doesnt really wear out like a normal jacket, trousers, or boots

Ukhammocks is £145 for the summer weight one, £175 for winter.

I'm not sure what my big three weigh, out of interest I'll weigh them in a bit, I'm tight as the proverbial ducks backside so don't like spending, buy of course you get what you pay for, lots of food for thought, thanks for correcting me on the prices.

I weighed my stuff when I got back last time,
            Bergen 2450g
            sleeping bag 2508g
            Tarp (wet) 2428g
            hammock 1554g
            Reflectix SPE 450g
            Thermarest 830g
So, my pack is under 700g now (GG Virga2), my down bag is just over 800g, gonna ditch the 4x4 DD barn! for my new 600g Sargasso tarp.... that's over 5kg dumped already!
Now it's the time to lose the Thermarest and Reflectix, in favour of feathers (if my purse can stretch to it).
And replacing the DD modular with single layer 11' Dutch (350g) plus Fronkey bugnet (250g) will dump another kilo.

Quick round figure weights of my main light load bits

              Bag 500g (35ltr) or 1kg (55ltr)
              hammock 500g
              Tarp 300g
UQ 770g full length -15*c......this is the next ting to lighten up next year
TQ 650g -6*c doubles as my cold morning coat so no extra insulating layer carried

Bopdude, down and lightweight gear in general is a big investment no doubt. But the way i look at it, it gives me the freedom to go full on ultralight with a tiny pack or (more likely) i can take loads of little extras that make life more enjoyable
i know i can carry a 9kg base weight before i really start to notice its there....so looking at the above weights i can carry things that i enjoy like a candle lantern, a pack of bacon in cooler weather, or an extra liter of water with extra fuel and have plenty of brews and still be well under my maximum prefered base weight

Just weighed what I could the best I can

                My medium bag 88l 2000g +/-
                Down sleeping bag 2200

I don't want to do this anymore lol, seriously, I can see what you mean, time to start saving, I packed in work in June to look after Dad so may take a while, I can't get out that often now so no great rush, thanks all.

Well, I had some unexpected money for Christmas, maybe it shouldn't have been the first choice on the list of things to spend it on, but, one UKHammocks winter UQ ordered, the angle and demon have been fighting ever since ?

Money well spent mate. Thats the one i'v got and its a lovely cozy coccoon of downy goodness

I got my dad the snugpak UQ for christmas and its about 4 times the size of the UKH winter quilt. Not to mention its suspension system being stupidly useless
He's a fair weather car camper though so after modding the suspension it will be good too just about freezing i reckon and ideal for him

Just made my biggest investment in hammocks yet.... Hammock Gear Phoenix 20

Plenty of nice things said about them, second hand, so not quite as painful on the pocket.

Nice, be good to compare them once the cold does hit us, if it does.
