    Any splicers here?

I was wanting larger tree straps for my whoopie and toggle setup for going around larger trees. Being a Yorkshire man I didn't want to spend any money so looked at making some extenders with some amsteel I had left over from my ridge line. At first I thought of continuous loops to larks foot to the end of the strap to lengthen it, but i didn't like the way they worked loose when they weren't under load. So I came up with these... A locked brummel at each end of a 1meter length of am steel makes a 50cm extender. The idea is to larks foot the clean loop on to the end loop of my tree strap then the other end of the tree strap goes around the tree then threads through the red end of the extender, thereby leaving a longer tail of webbing for the marlin knot and toggle. Can any one see a problem with the extender used in this way? Am I tying my continuous loops wrong if I can pull them apart when not under load? Thanks Neil

    Looks a good job 👍

Are they what they call, "Dog Bones"? More efficient use of cord too I guess; more extension, less expensive cord!

I like the covers on your loops,

      Is it wire insulator?

If you do the conventional brummel, you need to make sure the buried tails are plenty long enough and milked down tight.
There is another way some folk use, to make a properly locking brummel first. You have to build it the "wrong" way, the same way you would for a back splice, or eye splice; then bury the tails. You get a bit of a lump at the join, but they say it doesn't affect the strength.

the 1st vid shows the locked Brummel
the 2nd vid shows how to make the other end , the 3rd vid is just your continuous loop
you will end up with a dog bone of what ever length you want not that hard to do
I have never had a continues loop fail unless I tied it wrong

          Hello
Thanks for the info. I'd seen and learnt from those vids previously.
I saw a vid of someone putting stitches in the Bury of a continuous loop so I guess it's not just me with an issue of not liking it undoing when not under load.
Gadget. The red tube on the ends is heat shrink from Bob at BPLUK it great for loads of jobs, shrinks down with a hair dryer so no damage to the line.

            Nice tip, thanks.
What size are you starting with?
For 2.5mm I thought 5mm, as it shrinks 2:1, that sound about right? Or would a tighter fit be better?

I guess you can get the heat shrink in various diameters but not from BPL.
I'll try to find some tomorrow and measure starting diameter.

How do you post those larger pics like those above, Gadget?

I never got on with Zing-It when I tried it before, but I found the large eye needle in my box of bits the other day so I thought I'd have another go and it makes it easier to pull the bury back through, still takes a little bit of fiddling but it works .
