Is anyone else tempted by the shiney, silky stuff on offer?... we could get together!

Wouldn't mind a dutch hook and either a tarp flyz or wasp (not sure which is easier/best to use on the other end of a ridgeline?) just by way of a change from my normal knot tying !

I tend to find the range of stuff a bit baffling to be honest, my mind glazes over when I try to figure out most of it, but that's just me I guess !!!

    Cheers, Paul

On a continuous ridgeline?....thats what the wasp is designed for and does well.....saying that though, i'v just taken my wasp off to use yet another loop alien, much better and easier to use imo

For a tarp ridge line, but the Flyz are designed for that too I think, so how do you make the choice between the Flyz and the Wasp, unless I've misunderstood and they do different things ?

How are the loop aliens better do you think ? Are they larger and heavier ?

Yes mate, i meant a continuous tarp ridgeline or a seperate line at each end of the tarp
flyz are for a line at each end, designed to be fixed near the tarp perminantly. Wasp is for a continous because its designed to be moved along the ridgeline to wherever you happen to need it. Which you will need to do

Loopaliens do the same as a wasp just easier, quicker, kinder on the rope, and can be done with gloves on
i'v cut a slot in my chinese clones to mimic the pukka loopaliens and it really is brilliant. The wasp is a right faff and fiddle in comparison

I'v ordered some genuine aliens out of guilt because they are such a genius design. I can now hang both tarp and hammock with aliens on every cord.......i love em

Aah, I see, thanks, didn't really appreciate the terminology, forgot that some people just tie out the ends of their tarps instead of running a line !

That was my impression of the Wasps looking at them and the video, if they're that much faff I might as well stick to tying knots !

Unless I'm looking at the wrong video, the loop aliens used for the tarp continuous ridgeline need to be tied to the end of the ridgeline and then the rest of the line run through the alien ?

                    Cheers, Paul

You can use aliens in loads of different ways.

I'll have a go at explaining how i use mine on a CRL but i might have to try and do a vid when the genuine ones turn up

Ok bare with me on this
I attach it to the ridgeline like a wasp,(threaded though the small eye and medium eye).....and lock it off in the same sort of manner(single wrap around the medium eye). Only difference is its MUCH easier and quicker to slide up and down and then lock in place
I'v cut a notch in the big hole to mimic the UFA aliens. Again this works the same as when dutch shows the tightening on a wasp but quicker and easier again
Then its time to lock the line, which i do as derek hansen shows in the vid below

terrible explination i know, but by way of a test i'v done the above on a windy day wearing my full three layers of actic grade mitts and it was easy and fast as anything
I'v changed my guy out aliens to the same system. Only with the alu aliens rather than the stainless one on the CRL

I posted earlier on how you can use the LoopAlien with a tarp and a continuous ridge line, but a lot of folks prefer using guy lines just on the ends of the tarp’s...

Hi Paul I have just purchased some ailiens for my ridge line, will have them at the meet end of month so you can have a look if you are going?
I tend to run a standard ridge line and suspend my tarp from it via prussiks

Went and got a fair amount of Dutch bling in the summer, definitely recommend the wee worms for tarp tie outs. Adam, I'm guessing you got the oriental aliens from the online purveyor of all articles (inc nv components)?

Think I'll "pass" on the dutchware after all, just noticed a bit belatedly, as it's pretty clear and I should have noticed it straight away (!), that the hooks and wasps are specified for 1.75mm lines, and I use 2mm and 3mm and don't have any desire to change out the lines as well, so will stick to my knot tying after all

                        Cheers, Paul
